The air is crisp, pumpkin spice is everywhere, the days are getting shorter and it is now acceptable to wear sweaters 24/7. Fall is finally here and like many things that change with the season, so does the music I keep in rotation. It is time to say goodbye to the fun, upbeat sounds of summer and welcome the stripped-back acoustics and aggressive, emotional, and slightly depressing artists, albums, and songs that make up my fall playlist.

Artists:

During this time of year, certain artists enter the rotation and get more play time than they typically would during any other season.

Starting with the more chill and acoustic based artists, we have Cavetown. The majority of Cavetown’s music utilizes acoustic guitar and ukulele accompanied by chill beats. Listening to Cavetown is like putting on your favorite sweater on a cold day. You feel warm, content, and safe which is perfect for fall. Other artists include The Lumineers, Mumford and Sons, and The Civil Wars. Folk music is calming and easy to listen to, making it great background noise for any fall activity whether it be sitting inside with a book and a cup of tea or sitting with friends around a bonfire.

During the fall season I also listen to a lot of alternative rock and post-hardcore with emotional lyrics and rougher instrumentals. Something about the fact that it is getting darker sooner and everything is dying makes me feel a bit “emo”. A few bands that really fit this sound are Movements, Citizen, and La Dispute. Their deep lyrics mixed with aggressive vocals are perfect for the days when you’re in a darker mood and you want something a bit of angst to listen to.

Albums:

Plans – Death Cab for Cutie

Description: The entirety of this album is very quiet and relaxing. It reminds me of going for a walk on a chilly day with freshly fallen leaves crunching under my feet. Each song on this album was written beautifully with deeper lyrical content.

Favorite Tracks: I Will Follow You into the Dark, Different Names for the Same Thing, What Sarah Said

Forever Halloween – The Maine

Description: The album artwork and title will always make me associate the fall, specifically spooky season. This album may have a lot more upbeat songs than the others on this list but the entire album is filled with darker overtones.

Favorite Tracks: Forever Halloween, These Four Words, Kennedy Curse

Less Noise: A Collection of Songs by A Band Called The Maine – The Maine

Description: This is a compilation of songs that have stripped back and made acoustic. This takes upbeat songs I would typically listen to in the summer time and gives them the perfect fall vibe.

Favorite Tracks: Am I Pretty? (Acoustic), Diet Soda Society (Acoustic), Into Your Arms (Acoustic)

The Black Parade – My Chemical Romance

Description: This iconic album by My Chemical Romance has become a staple in my playlist during spooky season. The overall theme of death combined with the visuals from album art and music videos make it a great listen around Halloween.

Favorite Tracks: The Sharpest Lives, This Is How I Disappear, Mama

The Silence in Black and White – Hawthorne Heights

Description: The Silence in Black and White is an album I found around the beginning of my freshman year of high school. Since then I tend to revisit the album around this time of year. It utilizes the aggressive vocals, instrumentals, and emotional lyrics that I like in music during the fall.

Favorite Tracks: Ohio is for Lovers, Blue Burns Orange, Niki FM

Songs:

This is a small list of songs that I have included in my fall playlist because either the titles gave me fall vibes of the overall mood of the songs fit in with the sounds I am going for with my music during this season.

Forever Halloween – The Maine

Autumn Leaves – Ed Sheeran

Sweater Weather – The Neighborhood

Poison Oak – Bright Eyes

I Can Feel Your Pain – Manchester Orchestra

Vampires Will Never Hurt You – My Chemical Romance

The Horror of Our Love - Ludo
