One of the best things about being a music fan is finding new songs and artists to listen to and "obsess" over. There's this special feeling that you get when you discover new music and listen to it for the first time. Not knowing where to look or what to do can make finding new music difficult so here are a few tips that may help you in expanding your music taste.
Spotify's Discover Weekly
One of my favorite places to find new music is Spotify's Discover Weekly playlist. Using artists that you and people with similar music tastes listen to, Spotify puts together a playlist of songs that they think you will love. This playlist is updated with fresh songs every Monday so checking it out could become a part your weekly routine.
YouTube
YouTube is an amazing place for finding new artists. Many musicians use YouTube as a platform to share their music and promote themselves. There are hundreds of artists across a wide variety of genres there for you to check out. A few artists that I found from YouTube are Dodie Clark, Conan Gray, and Cavetown.
Not only are there many great musicians posting on YouTube, there are also many great music enthusiasts and reviewers creating content for you to check out. These guys listen to mass quantities of music so there is a high chance that they'll talk about artists that you've never even heard of. A few channels that I recommend are ARTV, Infinity On Hannah, Liz Rogers, and Sophie Tag.
Used CD and Record Bins
Checking out the used CD and record bins at your local record stores can be a fairly inexpensive way to find new music. Searching through the bins is time consuming but can be a fun weekend activity or something to do on your day off. If you find something that catches your eye whether it be an interesting album cover, song title, or just an artist that sounds familiar, buy it and check it out. Even if you end up not liking the album, it only cost you a few dollars. Record stores are also bringing in new music constantly so there will always be something new each time you go.
Listen Outside Your Genre
We all have certain genres that we prefer to listen to but sometimes this can get in the way of finding new music. Sometimes sticking to the same few genres can get a bit repetitive and we end up forming biases against other music genres. When looking into finding new music it is important to go outside your comfort zone and check out music in genres that you may not listen to regularly. Preferring certain genres over others isn't a bad thing but it's important to listen to others every once in a while.
Ask a Friend
No matter how similar of a music taste you have with a friend it is guaranteed that each of you listen to artists that the other has no idea about. Sometimes simply asking a friend "hey, do you have any music recommendations?" can be the best way to find new music. 9 out of 10 times I bet they'll come up with something.
Now take these tips with you and use them on your journey to finding new music. You never know, you might just find your new favorite band or music artist.
