“So sick and tired of being alone. So long, farewell I’m on my own. I’m sorry mom, I’ve got to go. I dug this gave I call my home.”

Earlier today, Palaye Royale released their much anticipated song ‘Lonely’ along with an extremely emotional and personal music video. Before today, fans could only hear a small teaser of the song provided on the new Jadu Hologram app. Now the song is here, and it was definitely worth the wait.

Palaye Royale are a fashion-art rock band currently based in Los Angeles. The group consists of brothers Emerson Barrett, Remington Leith, and Sebastian Danzig. ‘Lonely’ is the fifth single released from their upcoming album, The Bastards, which is set to release on May 29, 2020 through Sumerian Records.

‘Lonely’ was written by Palaye Royale front man Remington Leith about his experiences growing up. He gave some insight into the meaning of the song in the following statement which was commented on the music video.

“This song and video [are] extremely personal to me. As a child I was physically and mentally abused. Which caused me to become extremely depressed and suicidal. I always thought that I was the problem, that I must [have] done something so wrong to deserve that type of abuse from a person who was supposed to love me and didn’t see any other way out. It’s the reason I started wearing makeup because I thought if I looked like a different person, I would become a different person. A person that stands up for themselves. I somehow made it out alive and so grateful [every day] that I did. If you or anyone else that you know is going through something similar, please make a stand or be a friend because you could save a life. -Remington Leith”

As far as sound goes, ‘Lonely’ is probably the most different from the rest of Palaye Royale’s discography but the truthfulness displayed in the lyrics of the song makes it one of their best. Their writing has matured quite a bit since I started listening to their music a few years ago, not to say it was ever really immature, and they are releasing songs on more serious topics with deeper personal meanings. ‘Lonely’ is more vocal and lyric based. I feel that on some of the other singles that have been released Remington’s voice can occasionally get lost in the music. In ‘Lonely’ his vocals are the focus point and you can hear the raw emotion he expresses as he sings. The instrumental portion of the song remains subdued and steady throughout the entirety of the song aside from the chorus where is grows in volume and intensity. This helps to further express the melancholy tone given to the track. It's quite a bit different from their usual The Rolling Stones meets My Chemical Romance sound, but it is very welcome.

Along with the song Palaye Royale released a music video for 'Lonely' which was also directed by Remington Leith. Throughout the video it depicts him in a sort of downward spiral, starting with substance abuse, self-loathing, and a broken family, which ended laying in a grave that he dug for himself. I don’t think they could have made a better visual representation of the song. The video depicts the meaning perfectly and really captures the attention of the viewers. It does a great job expressing the emotions that Remington felt throughout the song.

Out of all the songs released by Palaye Royale, ‘Lonely’ has had the most impact on me emotionally because there are certain aspects of the song that I can relate to. When I came across this band in late 2017, I was in a similar mental state to Remington in this song. Palaye Royale and their music became a source of light and happiness in my life that I needed at the time and for that I am thankful. I am not the only person who has been impacted by this song as many fans of Palaye Royale have expressed their feeling and experiences in the comments of the video and on social media.

I feel that ‘Lonely’ has added to a conversation on mental health because when artists use their own experiences with topics such as depression, suicide, and many others as inspiration for their music, it helps to normalize talking about these topics and makes many fans feel less alone with their struggles.

Palaye Royale have created a masterpiece with this song. ‘Lonely’ is a brave and vulnerable look into the band and it is worth giving a listen. This is probably my favorite single from The Bastards album so far and I can’t wait to hear the rest.
